The show's term originated from two men sitting around drinking with friends and trying to entertain themselves, as it does with all great movies, TV series, and books.
Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird were hanging around one evening sketching doodles and watching awful late-night TV when they were inspired to summon the confidence to pursue one of their concepts.
The creators self-published single-issue comics using cash from a tax refund and a loan from Eastman's uncle to mimic several of the most successful comics of the early 1980s. The main influences were Daredevil and Frank Miller's Ronin.
Our mom and dad never let us use the actual armament while claiming to become the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as youngsters (boo!), and we had to adapt.
Donatello's bo staff served as a cleaning brush handle. Our girls' skipping rope served as Michelangelo's nunchucks, Raphael's twin sai's served as our father's rough gardening trowels, and Leonardo's katana blade was a shoddy plastic replica.
Despite all of this, we could still defeat the living daylights out of our friends. Back then, kids were a lot rougher. Let's face it that this is the only gift that every kid wishes for on Christmas morning.
It's still so amazingly cool 20 years later than it's at the peak of our wish list. That concludes our discussion. This year, we're requesting Santa for it once more.
